Hi everyone I am new to the forum. I live in Summerland California near Santa Barbara. I mostly want to do some relaxing joy riding with a new kayak. Perhaps a mile or two at a time. I plan to paddle close to shorish (whatever is safe?). So I would basically be paddling out 50 feet and going down the beach. The waters here are usually mild so little surf that surfers can only surf here a few days out of the year. Here is a google image search of summerland beach to give you an idea of the waters [Click Here]. However things can get a little rougher with white caps. We are Sheltered by the channel islands. Anyways I am looking for a kayak that would be safe for this purpose. I have done some kayaking on rental boats in san diego beaches but am not experienced and don't know much about water safety. I weigh 160 pounds and have average strength. I would often go with another person so I would have to either get a tandem or two kayaks. I am leaning towards a tandem. Price range is about $800 total. I drive a suburu impreza so both kayaks or the tandem would have to fit on top of the car. I may also do some fishing in the kayak in the kelp beds. Any advice on what to buy and how far is safe to go (down/up the coast and out towards the sea)? Thanks!

I can't help you as to what boat, but talk to others in your area, see what they say. Any local kayak dealers in the area could be a great asset to use as well. Good luck and keep us posted.

For what you're talking about in the environment shown, I would go with a sit on top like an Ocean Kayak brand boat...

But that's just my opinion.
